Inscription of ''Drunk Old Man Pavilion''

Ou Yang Xiu

mountains surround ''Chu'' (a city near Nan Jing)

especially pretty for those southwestern peaks

among them there is one magnificent and so beautiful

it is called  ‘Lang Ya’

after six or seven miles into the mountain

sound of water is gradually heard

the water goes down between two peaks

it is ‘Niang Spring’

a pavilion like a wing above the spring

who made the pavilion?

a monk in the mountain

he called himself  ‘wisdom immortal’

who named the pavilion?

It is a name that ''Tai Shou'' (mayor of Chu) self called

the mayor and guests gather and drink

he often gets drunk even drinks little

and he is the eldest

that''s why call himself ‘drunk old man’

the drunk old man does not like drinking but the mountains and springs

the joy is from heart and expressed by the wine

when the sun appears

the forest brightens

when the clouds return

the caves darken

the time changing between brightness and darkness

it is the mountain day and night

flowers sprout and scent

good plants grow prosperously

wind and frost appear so purely

water down and stones up

they are four seasons among the mountains

be there from the morning

returns in the evening

landscape of four seasons are different

the joy is so much

men with baggage sing on the road

pedestrians rest next to the trees

the former speak and the latter respond

those coming and going continuously are traveling citizen of Chu

fishing in the stream

the stream is deep and fishes are fat

Niang spring is the source of wine

the spring tastes good and so does the wine

meat is from the mountain animals

plants grow locally

so various and they are displayed

it is the banquet of mayor

the joy of banquet

not for just flutes and lutes

hit with the bow

win in the chess

toast to each other

sit and stand and talk

that is the joy of guests in the banquet

the man who is white headed

with an old face

never appears attractive

is the drunk mayor

at the sunset of mountains

shadows of the crowd scatter

the mayor returns home and guests follow

the forest darken

birds sing

guests return and the birds appear cheerful

but the birds enjoy the forests

not aware of joy of the crowd

the crowd enjoys travelling with the mayor

but not aware what the mayor enjoys

the one who enjoy with the crowd even when drunk

and make the inscription later

is the mayor himself

 who is the mayor?

it is ‘Ou Yang Xiu’ from ‘Lu Ling’.
